Every toy sold in the European Union must meet strict safety requirements. Here is what to look out for.
CE marking
The CE mark shows that the manufacturer declares compliance with the European toy-safety rules.
Age and small parts
The note "Not suitable for children under 36 months" means the toy has small parts. If there is a younger sibling at home, put the toy away after play.
Batteries
Toys with batteries should have a compartment that opens with a screwdriver. Button batteries are especially dangerous if swallowed – keep them away from children.
Magnets and balloons
- swallowed magnets can cause serious injuries
- uninflated or broken latex balloons are dangerous for children under 8
Cosmetics for children
Kids' make-up and nail polish must be made specially for children and used under adult supervision.
